Il solfato di magnesio eptaidrato è un reagente utile per applicazioni elettroniche. Se disidratato sopra i 200 °C, perde tutta l'acqua di cristallizzazione e diventa anidro.
In tal caso può essere usato come sale disidratante per molti liquidi organici.
Il solfato di magnesio, in soluzione satura, è anche utile per rigenerare le batterie al Pb per autotrazione, anche se completamente scariche.
Sostituendo l'acido solforico con questa soluzione e tramite un caricabatterie è possibile desolfatare completamente le piastre, portando la batteria alla capacità elettrica ottimale.
